Roommates is a series of drawings by Bill Talsma that depict the hairstyles of all his former roommates—twenty-eight of them to be exact. Both familiar and unfamiliar, complete and incomplete, the drawings betray Talsma’s selective memory of his roommates by isolating their hairstyles—both physically and descriptively—a gesture which reveals only a tiny sliver of a much larger story that spans four decades. Talsma invites viewers to complete these portraits by projecting their own ideas of what the missing faces might look like onto the empty spaces.
