Promise Series
Paper, photographs, 2004

Promise Series is a series of digital photographs of photographs of tiny men's golf shirts cutout from apparel magazines. I worked obsessively to cut out some 700 shirts, each between 1 inch to 4 inches wide or high. I photographed stacks of them similar to the stacks found in retail clothing stores. The shirts and photographs of the shirts in the apparel magazines seem so unbelievably American-caucasian and filled with the false hope and joy of the suburbs and transcendent consumerism, plus the promise of low humidity and backyard barbeques. This could be an examination of flatness, socio-economic normalcy and white-maleness.
